Many of us are familiar with the term dress code. Translated from English, it literally translates as "Dress code". The code is represented by a set of established rules that govern what to wear for each event. The ability to choose the right image, focusing on the situation, is highly valued in secular circles and is indispensable for every self-respecting gentleman.

Brief historical background

This term has come down to us from the UK. The appearance of a man, especially in royal circles, is extremely important. Otherwise, he will not be admitted to a certain event.

Initially, there were only 4 styles of clothing that could be easily distinguished and classified:

  • an option for every day, which was called Casual;
  • image for business meetings - Business;
  • dress style for evening events - Semi-formal;
  • strict formal image - Formal, this option is also called Black Tie.

There was a special rule for tailcoats.

A classic-colored tailcoat with a bow tie of the same color was usually worn only in the evening, after 6 pm. During the day, they wore a black suit, complemented by a white accessory.

Formal dress code and variations

In the English dictionary, this dress code is called Morning dress and White Tie.

And also professional designers actively use the following designations:

  • Formal;
  • Full formal;
  • Full dress;
  • Formal attire.

Formal clothing comes in two flavors:

  • White Tie;
  • Morning dress.

It should be noted that this image is perceived incorrectly in modern society. Many people mistakenly believe that this is a business suit, complemented by a classic tie. However, the correct formal style is much stricter and more complex. It was designed for a specific range of meetings and events.

Due to the fact that this style came to us from Europe, the rules for its use were also dictated by the inhabitants of the UK.

A formal dress code should be followed in the following situations:

  • diplomatic meetings;
  • official award ceremonies;
  • events related to the meeting of ambassadors and other dignitaries;
  • receptions held in the royal family;
  • Royal Ascot horse races (a popular event among the secular nobility of Great Britain).

The clothes that are customary to wear on the above occasions will differ depending on the time of day. If the sun is shining outside, you must choose an option called Morning dress. The main characteristics of this image are a black tailcoat and a vest of the same color.

As soon as evening comes, you need to change into the White Tie style. In this case, a white bow tie is worn along with a classic suit. They also wear a snow-white vest and the same shirt. At the same time, the tailcoat remains black.

The classic combination of achromatic colors is always in fashion and looks expressive. The colors contrast with each other, emphasizing each other.

Semi-formal clothing

The next style we'll look at is called Black Tie and Stroller in the original language.

And also the following terms are used to designate it:

  • Semi-formal;
  • Smoking;
  • Le Smoking.

Such designations can be found in official reference books.

Like the previous version, the semi-official look can be divided into two groups:

  • Black Tie;
  • Stroller.

Despite the name, this style has remained austere, along with the formal dress code. However, this image is not used in everyday life.

A semi-formal look should be chosen in the following cases:

  • ceremonial events, including the presentation of prizes;
  • wedding banquets;
  • visiting the theater;
  • graduation parties;
  • charity meetings.

The semi-formal style is also divided into groups depending on the time of day. A separate option is provided for the day and evening. In the daytime, you must select the Stroller option. This is a simplified version of Morning Dress. In this case, you can wear a tuxedo not only in black, but also in gray. The image is complemented by gray striped white trousers.

The tie can be gray or silver. The second option is more elegant and elegant. Be sure to wear a vest. It can be light gray or light blue.

With the onset of the evening, they choose the second style option. After sunset, you must change into a black tuxedo. They wear a white dress shirt and a bow tie to match the color of a tuxedo.

Informal masculine style

Now let's move on to an informal look, which was developed in the UK especially for the stronger sex. In Europe, this image is called the Business Dress.

And the following designations are also relevant:

  • Business Attire;
  • Cocktail;
  • Informal.

It should be noted that this image is presented in a wide variety of species:

  • Cocktail;
  • Business, Corporate and Smart casual;
  • other types.

An image that necessarily implies the use of a classic suit is called an informal business dress code. Modern designers who design clothes for men have released a variety of suits into the fashion world, combining business and informal styles.

To understand the peculiarity of this style, consider the following example. A business suit in black is a strict element of the wardrobe, while clothes made from light fabrics are more informal. The same goes for striped suits.

This style can be selected in the following cases:

  • walks with friends or acquaintances;
  • evening entertainment;
  • public meetings;
  • conversations with business partners and colleagues;
  • thematic conferences;
  • clothes for the office.

Unlike the options described above, the informal style is not divided according to the time of day. Wherein gentlemen follow an unspoken rule: after sunset, they wear darker suits (gray or blue), and in the daytime they choose clothes in light shades of gray or brown.

Note: It's worth noting the style called After Five. Literally, this phrase is translated as "after five". It is easy to guess that such outfits are chosen for evening events. In this case, men do not need to wear a suit. They can opt for pants or even jeans. The look is complemented by club blazers, classic shoes and shirts. A tie is also optional.

Corporate

This style is also called office style. It is worth noting that this is a separate system that sets standards for the appearance of employees of a particular company. The rules apply not only to clothing, but also to hairstyles, accessories and other components.

Usually, for the stronger sex, the office dress code consists of a classic shirt and trousers. In some large companies, it is compulsory to wear a jacket to match the trousers. Complement the style with shoes.

Informal and Cocktail

This style is perfect if you are going to a meeting at a restaurant, planning to visit an exhibition or gallery. And also it is chosen for home parties. Men dress in classic suits. Another component of the look is a long-sleeved business shirt. Cufflinks are used as accessories.

For a cocktail party, you can choose a light jacket, and a classic tie is often changed to a scarf. In the absence of a tie or any similar accessory, the top button must be unbuttoned.

Business Casual

The prefix Casual means that certain liberties are allowed in the image.To comply with the dress code, it is enough to wear a shirt and trousers. The jacket is optional. You can add a blazer to your outfit. When composing an image, you can use wardrobe items of different colors.

Style involves wearing classic shoes. Jeans or chinos cannot be worn.

This style is often chosen for various social events.

Smart Casual

The last style we will focus on combines elegance and everyday life. The dress code is comfortable, informal and relaxed. The Smart Casual look is perfect for a variety of events, including meetings with business partners and parties. When composing an image, a tie is optional. You can also wear a sports jacket.

Classic trousers can be replaced with dark-colored jeans, but shoes must be classic. Shoes will fit great.

How to choose?

When choosing an image for a man, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of each dress code. One style is great for clubbing, while others are perfect for office work or VIP meetings.

If you are choosing clothes for the evening, opt for clothes in dark colors. If you do not want to wear a black suit, pay attention to models in dark blue or dark gray.

It is better to wear light-colored clothes not only during the daytime, but also in summer. In the heat, such things are much more comfortable to wear.
