One of the useful elements of the interior is the reading lamp in the bed. Directional bedside lamps come in many different types, and in this article we'll talk about them, including sconces, and how to choose the right model.

There are a lot of types of lamps for reading in bed in the modern world.

Sometimes lamps are simply used as a decorative element to illuminate the bedside table.

Let's consider several classifications.

By the nature of the light distribution:

  • straight (and predominantly straight) directional;
  • scattered;
  • reflected (and mostly reflected);
  • point.

If possible, change the position:

  • movable (can be rotated and guided to the desired location within the permissible radius);
  • motionless (stationary).

If possible, change the lighting characteristics (light brightness):

  • adjustable;
  • unregulated.

By location type:

  • suspended;
  • built-in;
  • wall-mounted;
  • add-ons (those that are mounted in a wall cabinet or a low wall shelf behind the head of the bed);
  • on a clothespin (usually attached to the headboard);
  • floor.

The latter include a floor lamp, and its convenience lies in the ability to transfer the device to a sofa or armchair - any necessary place for reading, working on embroidery and other things.

Devices with flexible metal elements are now gaining special popularity.

According to the method of turning on and off the sconces in the bedroom, there are:

  • lace;
  • push-button;
  • keyboards (including keys on the wire);
  • sensory (from touch).

Separately, you can still distinguish varieties by the nature of the light:

  • warm (marked with LTB);
  • cold (LHB);
  • neutral or daytime (LD).

The closest to natural light are considered to be warm glow bulbs.

The best option for built-in light bulbs is LED. They have many advantages, such as soft light that does not irritate the eyes, durability and economy (they themselves are more expensive, but consume relatively less electricity).

Considering shades, which are made mainly of glass, one can distinguish open and closed, where the latter type of shape creates a diffused glow. The material can withstand high temperatures, and the decoration can range from colored glass to decorative patterned applications.

How to choose

A competent choice contributes to the correct and eye-safe organization of light. Consider the main aspects when choosing a particular lamp.

  • Glow softness. Excessively harsh light will make your eyes tired from the very first minutes of reading.
  • The evenness of the luminous flux. The decoration of the sconce should not leave shadows and highlights.
  • Fastening. For a wall or pendant lamp, it should be sturdy and of sufficient size to the left of the reading area.
  • Power. Permissible in the range of 60-100 W, for LED - 9-12 W. The power depends on the dimensions of the illuminated object, 70-80 W is suitable for illuminating the book.
  • Security. It is, of course, more important than all research in the field of beautiful design.
  • Convenience. For comfortable use, at best, the sconce should have a function for adjusting the light power. The switch should be located in a convenient and accessible place.
  • Quality. The more good recommendations and reviews the manufacturer has, the higher the likelihood that the lamp will serve you for a long time. When choosing a lamp in a store, consider the quality of the material. For example, when ordering via the Internet during transportation, especially fragile elements may break.
  • Light direction. Often before going to bed, many people are distracted from the outside fuss and gadgets while reading a book. The lamp should not interfere with your bedmate or roommate, illuminating this or that area.
  • Aesthetics. The lamp is only a part of the bedroom; it should organically fit in and complement its interior.

Keep in mind that on average, the sconce is located at a height of one and a half meters from the floor.

Design

More convenient for reading are sconces with a round or cone-shaped shade.

They gently scatter the light, while the cylindrical shades narrow it greatly and are not suitable for reading.

So, let's take a look at a few versatile and practical design options.

  • A calm option that simulates a sunset.
  • Lamps with a warm romantic glow.
  • Built-in vertical lamps in harmony with the floor lamp on the left.
  • Movable metal lamps will be a great addition to the men's bedroom.
  • The example below illustrates well the importance of correct direction of light.
  • Point light.
  • Purely decorative light. The picture clearly shows that it will optimally illuminate only objects on the nightstand.
  • A design in a similar shape is perfect for animal lovers or for a children's bedroom.
  • Ceiling mount option.
  • A similar option with hanging lamps. The main thing is that the cat does not hunt them.
