Sandals are one of the oldest types of footwear. They were worn in Ancient Rome, Greece, Babylon. And this is not surprising, because the design of such shoes is quite simple: a flat sole, to which straps are attached to fix the foot. They could be thin or wide, short or long. Today sandals have not lost their relevance. On the contrary, such shoes are simply irreplaceable in everyday life for both men and women.

Species overview

Men's sandals come in several types.

Everyday

The design and material for making such shoes can be anything. Most often these are classic models that will not attract too much attention to themselves, are successfully combined with any wardrobe, as comfortable as possible. Minimalist sandals in leather or textiles are ideal. They can be flat or small heels, with closed or open toes or heels.

The main selection criteria: comfort and high quality, since such shoes are basic and will serve you for more than one year.

Orthopedic

Today, many manufacturers of quality footwear make sure that their products are not only stylish, but also match the anatomical structure of the foot as best as possible. Of course each person's foot is unique, so it is best to purchase separate insoles that are made specifically for your foot. However, there are ready-made orthopedic sandals that are sold in specialized salons. Modern technologies make it possible to make them not only comfortable, but also beautiful.

It is easy and pleasant to walk in such sandals. Thanks to their clever design, they help reduce stress on the spine and provide maximum support for the foot.

Sports

If your life is full of activity, then you simply cannot do without sports sandals. These do not have to be ultra-technological models, but still there are certain requirements for such shoes. The sole must be resistant to intense loads, flexible and not slippery. Metal fittings should be avoided - Velcro and rubber will work better.

Sports sandals must be carefully selected in the store, imagine how they will behave in a given situation and not skimp on a really high-quality option.

Greek (Roman)

These are some of the most famous models of such shoes. Summer sandals in the Greek style are also called gladiators, since it was these fighters who wore them in ancient times. Then it was rough, the most practical shoes made of real leather. Now the sandals have been slightly changed for modern needs, while retaining the main distinctive feature - a large number of straps that can reach to the ankle or even to the knee. Another highlight of the model is the high top made of dense leather.

What in ancient times was commonplace, today borders on extravagance, therefore Greek sandals are more often used in shows or to create thematic images than for everyday life in a metropolis.

However, with the right clothes, such models will look very stylish and original.

Trekking

Good footwear, ready to withstand any challenge, is an essential part of travel gear. After all, if you have calluses on your feet, you won't go far. Choose your trekking shoes as picky as possible, don't compromise, and certainly don't sacrifice comfort and durability in favor of beauty and style. The requirements for trekking sandals are more stringent than for sports ones. They should be made of fast-drying, technologically advanced materials, with the best outsole that will provide support for the foot and excellent traction, and will also be able to withstand all weather conditions.

If the hike is long, it is advisable to prefer models with a closed heel and toe. Such a model will protect against damage to the legs from stones and other obstacles.

Beach

But the requirements for beach sandals are minimal: lightweight breathable materials, no heels. If you like active rest, you can find sandals in which you can swim and walk on wet rocks. The same models are simply irreplaceable for children who love to study the world around them so much.

Materials (edit)

The service life of the product and the comfort when wearing it will depend on the quality of the material. For the production of men's sandals, the following raw materials are most often used.

Leather

This is the most common material for making sandals. Leather is very durable, while its appearance does not deteriorate over time, on the contrary, it acquires a characteristic attractiveness.

Nevertheless today it is not necessary to use materials of animal origin. Eco-leather and leatherette look no worse, while being much cheaper. Leather sandals are best suited for everyday use and will look great even with business looks in the hot season.

By the way, even if the product itself is not made of leather, the insole made of this material will provide additional comfort while walking.

Textile

This material is significantly cheaper than leather, while it can be no less comfortable and of high quality. Contemporary brands offer stylish beachwear and casual fabrics by combining different types of materials.

Trekking and sports sandals are practically not made entirely of fabric. Textiles are present only in combination with other materials.

Rubber

Incredibly practical material. It is easy to clean and the rubber sandals will stay water-resistant, making them ideal for the beach and short walks. The product can be partially made of rubber, for example, only the sole, or completely rubber.

There are special types of rubber that prevent your feet from sweating in hot weather and prevent the formation of bacteria. At the same time, such shoes look quite attractive. This is the most practical option, but only suitable for domestic use.

Velor and suede sandals are not often produced, since such materials are not entirely practical for this type of shoe.

Design

The most common men's sandal models are slippers and flip flops, as well as Greek-style products with straps. There are options for flat, thick and ribbed soles.

Their color scheme is usually discreet: most often you can see black, brown, blue, dark gray and beige models on sale.

Unlike women's sandals, men's sandals are rarely decorated with additional fittings - perhaps buckles, embossing (if we are talking about natural leather), and the brand's logo.

Top brands

There are quite a few manufacturers of men's sandals, but leading firms are Merrell, Columbia, Rider, Outventure... They offer a large selection of outdoor sandals. The assortment includes open and closed male models, designed for all sorts of activities. The cost of sandals also ranges from affordable to expensive.

Brands Nike, Rieker, Geox, Ralf Ringer and the like specialize in the manufacture of casual and sports shoes. The cost of sandals in these stores is quite affordable, while the quality of the products is good.

What to wear with?

For decades, one of the worst "fashion crimes" has been to pair open shoes with socks. Today everything is different. Of course, at events with a strict classic dress code, this version of the image will not be entirely appropriate. Nevertheless street fashion dictates its own rules and promotes a pair of socks and sandals... Especially if socks have unusual designs and colors - now this is one of the main trends.

Sandals go well with clothes made from natural materials: jeans, T-shirts, loose shirts, shorts of various styles, summer trousers.
