Repair and restoration of spring mattresses

A mattress that sags in various places is not just an indicator that it is very old and in need of repair. Such a sleeping place can cause back pain and sleep problems.

The best option in this case is to replace the mattress with a new one. However, if at the moment there is no money for such an expensive thing, you can try to do the repair yourself.

The need for repairs can arise for a number of reasons. Among them:

• the fastenings of the rails are damaged;
• the springs are broken or deformed;
• the outer skin is damaged;
• built-in components are erased;
• the frame has broken;
• the corner mounts on the mattress are out of order.

The repair work is carried out in accordance with the following algorithm:

• first, whole elements are cleaned;
• the product as a whole is carefully inspected;
• components that cannot be replaced must be checked for operability;
• all fasteners are removed from the rails;
• springs are tied up or they are completely replaced with new ones;
• the mattress is assembled in the reverse order;
• the product is sheathed with new fabric.

If there is no money for an experienced craftsman, then you can restore the product yourself. To work, you need a minimum set of tools:

• side cutter;
• pliers;
• screwdriver, always flat;
• hammer;
• construction stapler and staples.

Consumables and materials will have to be purchased on the construction market.

The cross section of the last consumable should be from 4 to 6 mm.

It is important to know in what order the work is done.

To fix the mattress yourself at home, you first need to disassemble it.

• Find the ends of the cord at the bottom and top of the product. This is the piece of fabric that holds the top and bottom of the mattress in place.
• Use scissors or a knife to tear off the fabric at the junction, as it is not always possible to do this with your hands.
• Remove all buttons or rivets from both sides of the fabric. Pull it off the mattress. Remove the padding layer if possible. It can be made of foam, wool or cotton.
• Remove coconut or wood fiber if present in the product. You will need to completely release the springs - this is the only way to assess the state of the frame. If some materials can be reused, then they should first be washed and dried well.
• Pull out all the brackets that hold the frame. Sometimes they are used to support the shape of the board, but they are not in newer models. Pliers work well for removing staples.
• Move the boards to the side, leaving the metal springs. Those that have lost their shape and broken will need to be completely replaced or rewound.

At the second stage, work is done with the frame.

It will need to be cleaned well using a metal brush and can be reanimated.

• The cladding is removed completely, since beneath it it is impossible to see how much the metal components have been damaged by corrosion. The plaque is scraped off to a metallic sheen and a visual inspection for more serious damage begins.
• Be sure to check individual elements of the frame.Press on the springs to troubleshoot. The damaged ones are removed.
• If the whole block fails, then it is easiest to replace it, and not rewind. If you neglect this requirement, then soon you can again face a breakdown. Re-restoration is a rather costly business, for this reason, you should immediately pay attention to all the flaws.
• A special device is used to tie the springs. For this, the element is first removed, restored, and then reinstalled in place. The spring is locked in place, and the mount is subsequently closed.

When the spring block is completely repaired, first a lining material is applied to it, then a layer of sealant. The latter is fixed with brackets on a wooden base.

The cover is sewn separately or purchased ready-made. It is pulled over the resulting base. In the corners, you will need to fold the fabric with a scarf and put a little padding polyester. This will make the shape more attractive.

If you work slowly, then even a beginner can do such work.

What is the main difference between this type of mattress? These are not only separate, non-interconnected elements in the structure, but also greater compression. Such products have a longer service life, they can withstand an impressive load.

In such mattresses, each spring works independently, and therefore has a limited durability resource. If this limit is exceeded, then repairs cannot be avoided.

When solving problems that can lead to a sagging mattress, in many cases adding a new piece of foam rubber or simply replacing a broken spring can correct the situation. In any case, buying replacement spring elements is cheaper than buying a whole mattress.

First, disassemble and thoroughly clean the inside of the product using a vacuum cleaner. Next, remove the upholstery, seal, insulation material.

Remove nails and harness. Place the spring system vertically, align them in height. Nail torn or loose elements to the slats.

Replace the straps that come with your mattress with slats whose length should be equal to the width of the product.

We fix the slats to the frame. You will first need:

• remove the fastening edging;
• remove all nails and old straps;
• cut slats of a suitable size;
• apply markings to the frame;
• cut out the grooves for the slats.

After fastening the springs to the frame, it is necessary to strap the spring mechanism:

• using nails to make hooks and place them opposite each row;
• tie the springs along, across and diagonally with a strong cord, connecting the springs of a row with these hooks;
• at the end of the strapping, the hooks will need to be bent.

The last stage, which implies the following actions:

• covering the mattress with lining fabric;
• fixing special rollers from the seal on the lining;
• stretching the decorative cover, securing it.

Such a mattress is considered a standard product. Its design provides a block where the springs enter. The model has a long service life, since the load is distributed to all elements in the structure at the same time. Even if one spring breaks, the product as a whole will not be damaged.

It is very simple to fix a breakdown in such a model on your own. The user is only required to find the place where it is necessary to change the element, gain access to it and make a replacement.

The restoration of such a product does not take much time. If you pull the mattress yourself, you can save a significant amount of money. This option allows you to renew an old mattress at half the cost.

If only the outer part is damaged, that is, the upholstery and filler, then the product can be restored in a couple of days. Things are much more complicated when you have to change one or more internal components, be it a spring or rails on the frame.

If this is a product with separate components, then there is nothing difficult in replacing one part. But blocks of continuous weaving are made in production, it is very difficult to find them in this version on sale.

Experience shows that a repaired spring mattress is no worse than a new one if the restoration process has been thoroughly approached. However, in some advanced cases, a beginner cannot cope with the work of restoring the frame. This is the very option when you simply cannot do without a professional.

In every city there is definitely a workshop ready to take on this kind of work. Comprehensive replacement, even in this version, can significantly save money.

It is almost impossible to restore an orthopedic model without proper experience, since it is necessary to observe certain parameters and shape.
