Even in an ordinary studio apartment, you can create a loft mood. Free and relaxed, with a reconciling eclecticism, comfortable and cozy (albeit not in the most familiar notion of coziness) space has relatively recently become popularized in interior styles.

Style features

The myth about the loft is that this style can truly be embodied in an apartment if you live in an attic or in a former factory building. Nothing of the kind: even in a relatively small space, you can organize a loft using not the most complicated techniques and tricks.

A small style guide: what a loft is.

  • Colour... The industrial mood of the loft is dominated by gray as well as muted terracotta. Gray is also different shades of concrete, and terracotta comes down to the expressiveness of old brick and old wood. This is a base, a background that will help to combine objects that are not so characteristic of a loft into one.

  • Renovation and finishing... They can be associated with good savings. If you leave, for example, rough ceilings, this already allows you not to spend money on tension or plasterboard structures. If the blocks of interior partitions are displayed, this is also a saving in repair. Even the wiring in the loft is rarely hidden in the wall.
  • Required elements... One such is the bar counter. Not that loft design is not complete without it, but in 9 cases out of 10 it is in the studio. By the way, it can also be a separator stand.

Increasingly, the obligatory vintage wood is appearing in the style - from old beams to tables, beautiful for their chipping and decorative destruction.

  • A lot of space... Therefore, a single room with a kitchen turns into a studio, because an apartment with the same footage will look completely different. Nothing should get in the way, no unnecessary cabinets and bedside tables and other furniture, which is generally accepted, but completely useless in the context of a loft.
  • Information plates... Here's a style where road signs, restaurant signs and retro posters look organic. They show that a city man lives in this studio, interested, curious and ready for experiments.

Of course, a couple of paragraphs are not enough to describe this freedom-loving style, but for a general presentation it is already not bad. At least one can immediately understand whether this style is close.

Zoning options

The loft does not imply interior partitions, it preaches a single space in which the kitchen is combined with the living room and bedroom. This could be one large room with a fireplace, for example. Or not necessarily a large one: in small one-room apartments, they also make a loft, only, perhaps, softer variations of it, not without a touch of minimalism.

But open space also needs zoning.

  • Color zoning... A good old-fashioned welcome that will suit spaces of 20, 22, 25 sq. m. White, gray, brown, black - these are the main colors of the loft. Cold tones complement bright spots in the form of decor, paintings, accessories. To separate the gray kitchen area from the brown living room - you can do this, or you can beat different shades of gray in one project, for example.

  • Lighting... This option is more suitable for spaces of 40, 45 sq. m and more. Large windows, panoramic, are more typical for a loft, that is, there should be enough light in the room a priori. But artificial lighting also sets the mood of the style: the kitchen area can be separated by many lamps in the industrial style, and in the living area you can hang one large chandelier or a complex lighting system collected in one place.
  • Furniture... A large sofa facing the kitchen area can separate two parts of one studio. Sometimes there is also a shelving with books or just a cabinet with an open system of many shelves.
  • Bar counter... This option both separates the spaces, and at the same time helps them to merge. In the kitchen, they make coffee and make delicious sandwiches, and enjoy such a breakfast at the counter that "looks" into the living area.

Any author's techniques are only welcomed in the design of a loft studio. Especially now, as never before, individuality is valuable, therefore, building space strictly according to design textbooks is a habit of yesterday.

How to choose and arrange furniture?

Vintage furniture would be salutary in this situation, and you can search for it on different sales sites: sometimes an old, but still very solid and durable cabinet can be found at a ridiculous price. So the chairs for the dining table (if there is one, of course) can and should be selected not from one collection, but "motley". The older they look, the better - the loft loves things with a story.

Tips for choosing loft-style furniture:

  • metal, wood and glass - all this is actively used, and can be present in the studio in different proportions;

  • if you don't want to equip the bar counter, you can replace it with a sliding table - he either stands modestly in the form of a small coffee table, then turns into a platform for a large company;
  • chairs are made either of solid wood (and you can't find better vintage options), either metal or high quality plastic;
  • the sofa needs a simple but presentable - minimal decor, maximum comfort, enough space and high strength should be in it;
  • the upholstery of the same sofa - only of the highest quality (coarse fabric, leather or eco-leather) so that you can use the sofa for years and not doubt its reliability;
  • loft is a functional style, and therefore the sofa can have roomy storage boxes;
  • there are usually a lot of seats - guests of the owner often gather in the studio, therefore everyone should be cozy and comfortable, and chairs can be not only from different sets, but also from different styles;
  • beds in this style require maximum simplicity, minimal decor and decoration, because everything is in a common space, and such an intimate detail of the situation should not be accentuated;
  • pallet bed - an excellent, besides, a cheap option, quite in the concept of a loft;
  • consoles and racks - frequent style elements that replace massive chests of drawers, do an excellent job with space zoning and serve as spacious storage places.

If the dressers are rough, if the cabinets are tall, and built-in furniture can also find a place for itself in a loft studio, in order, again, to free up space. It is, as already noted, a priority.

Lighting and decor

The central lighting element is usually used in a loft, in this style is similar to other design directions. Its design is often strict and not particularly expressive. But if someone wants to make the central lighting element bold, this is also not at odds with the principles of style. Decorative light is a decoration of the loft, serves as a highlight of your favorite areas.

Dimensional floor lamps (quite possibly also retro) and rough table lamps are actively used in the loft.

Spotlights and spots are also used in the loft., which well illuminate corners and various hard-to-reach places in the studio. They are considered neutral luminaries, and it is good if they are luminaires that are dynamic and can change the direction of light - rail light sources.

A also an active element of lighting in a loft space is a spotlight... This is a metal illuminator made in the form of a spotlight, it can become the centerpiece of a space. Not the biggest in it, but very expressive, style-forming.The gaze always falls on what stands out, seems unique, unusual - so why not be such an element to the spotlight.

And finally it's hard to imagine a loft style without Edison lamps... These are simple glass bulbs with a spiral sealed inside, but they are completely self-sufficient in the space presented to them. They can be used without a shade or in lighting fixtures with a transparent or metal shade.

A similar (in terms of frequency of use) lighting element has become spider chandelier, graceful and careless at the same time. And if you want something stricter, with more correct geometry, it will be lamps on the rod.

The most demanded décor in the loft are:

  • Wall Clock - original clockwork, creativity with an industrial focus, or, conversely, a vintage cuckoo clock, huge and heavy;

  • paintings - unusual, strange, not on canvas, but on another, very unexpected plane, large and bright, calm and cold, everything will suit a loft;

  • artistic elements or objects that have become such - these can be, for example, mannequins that have become art objects (at least in the context of one concrete apartment).

The good thing about the loft is that on 30, 40, 50 and more square meters, you can make a completely unique space in which the owner expresses himself and his world to the maximum.

Beautiful examples of the interior

And in order to understand the style better, you need to develop the familiarity - look for attractive, distinctive interiors, study them and use some ideas in your own projects.

Here are 8 cool loft studios.

  • A bicycle hanging on the wall is better than any decor, and the decoration creates a loft mood in such a way that you might not notice the interior items from rather ordinary, traditional styles that have immediately migrated here.

  • Brick, beams, white with brown and gray, and a bright yellow spot (armchair) are all pretty typical of a loft. But these typical formulas work great.
  • The kind of loft that is called cozy. Perfectly matched colors, very cool lighting fixtures, and a bed behind glass - everything is perfect here.
  • A pallet sofa for a loft is nothing new. Like a brick wall. But this is just an example that interesting style does not necessarily correlate with serious costs.
  • For singles or a young family - a great studio option. Everything is quite traditional, but functional, and every thing in this space is actually in its place.
  • This example has an interesting design for the ceiling, as well as the kitchen, which seems to be very close to the seating area. The lighting theme has also been worked out in great detail and carefully.
  • The same floor lamp-spotlight, which immediately catches the eye. Such a loft is easy to make in an apartment, where until recently there was an average renovation without frills.
  • The old-fashioned table, chairs from different sets, everything is like a textbook.

Let the new loft space be on a par with these examples, and even be even cooler!
