Placing a refrigerator in the corridor is a method suitable for people living in an apartment or country house with a very limited utility block or kitchen. This method is not suitable for owners of a studio apartment, which is the only room for all tasks.

Advantages and disadvantages

A refrigerator is a built-in or free-standing thing. He does not care where to stand - as long as there is sufficient ventilation for his normal operation. It is built in or hidden in a wardrobe, decorated for any style of corridor decoration.

If the kitchen is combined with the living room, and you often have guests, then the refrigerator is a source, albeit small, but noise. For country houses 4x5 m, where the kitchen is combined with a bedroom or an office, placing a refrigerator in the corridor is the only way out. No matter how quiet refrigerators are, they make no less noise than the indoor unit of a split air conditioner. In the kitchen-living room in the summer, where the air conditioner often works, and you want to relax, the refrigerator also prevents you from falling asleep.

A refrigerator placed a few meters or more from the kitchen can be inconvenient. Cooking is almost always associated with the fact that at a certain moment you have to get the right products from the refrigerator or freezer. Ideally, when the refrigeration unit stands immediately, through the wall from the kitchen, near the entrance to it.

The lack of a separate outlet nearby in the corridor, which can be assigned to the refrigerator, forces the use of an extension cord.

How to place?

In the "Khrushchevs" the corridors are rather narrow next to the kitchen; it will be possible to place a refrigerator there only near the entrance to the apartment, where the hallway has a nearly square shape. If possible, move other household items out of the kitchen to make room for the refrigerator. If a full-fledged refrigerator in the kitchen does not fit, use a smaller, built-in model. The fact is that the kitchen is separated from the hallway by an extremely narrow passage, in which it would be impossible to place a refrigerator. The hallway is located quite far away - the convenience of cooking will suffer in any case. A niche in the corridor or closet is considered a great success for such a solution: the option of placing a refrigerator there depends on the specific version of the "Khrushchev", of which there are at least 6.

In a small country house of 4x5 m, 3x4 m, placing a refrigerator in the corridor is impossible, in most cases the room on such a living space is practically the only one. However, the corridor, even if it is on the plan, will not allow placing a full-fledged refrigerator in it.

How to hide?

The design of many modern apartments is more comprehensive in comparison with the "Khrushchev" apartments. This is due to the fact that new buildings, erected since the 2000s, are quite practical and functional. In most of them there are no narrow passages, and you can beat the interior of the hallway in different ways by placing a refrigerator in it.

In new buildings, the ability to place a refrigerator within walking distance from the kitchen is almost always present. It can be hidden both in a rather spacious wardrobe, and left in plain sight, decorating this unit to match the walls, next to one of which it was placed.

Examples in the interior

Several options are given as examples.

  • Behind a small closet. The cabinet can partially - for example, half - cover the refrigerator. There may be a mirror next to the cabinet. The cabinet is chosen in white in combination with the walls in the corridor.

  • Place next to the 4-drawer cabinet - next to the kitchen entrance. The curbstone is closer to the kitchen door than the unit itself. The opposite is more rational.
  • The back side is to the interior door, the front side is to the kitchen entrance. Modern models of refrigerators do not have motors exposed at the very bottom of the rear part for display, which allows the unit to be turned to the front door by either side. This option is suitable when the corridor is not too large, but it is necessary to place the refrigerator there, since there is not enough space in the kitchen.
  • Next to the stairs to the second floor. The hallway is usually quite large in two-story cottages. Despite the decent size of the kitchen-living room (or kitchen-dining room), a number of owners remove the refrigerator into the corridor. Nearby, you can place the original wardrobe, which does not look like a compartment. If a wardrobe is still used, the refrigerator is removed into one of its compartments, having removed all the shelves from the latter, and the wardrobe is customizable, collapsible.
  • Single-chamber mini-refrigerators are built into both regular and compartment-type wardrobes. The shelves are preliminarily removed from the compartment (if any). An exception is freezing units with a door that opens from the top.

To adapt perfectly to the interior of the hallway without changing it, get a model with an open architecture. This means that the door can be opened both to the right and to the left. There are fewer such models than with traditional, unchangeable opening to the right, but they are. Removing and re-hanging the door is carried out by dismantling and remounting the bolted hinge connections, which are universal and are supplied with the product.
