Landscaping a balcony is a great option for those who do not have the opportunity and time to go out into nature, but really want to enjoy it. In this article, we will tell you about how to plant greenery on a balcony and a loggia, what you need to take into account.

Peculiarities

To enjoy nature, flowers and other vegetation, you do not have to travel somewhere out of town. You may well be engaged in landscaping your balcony, and it doesn't matter if it is closed or open, small or large. In any case, you can equip a green balcony that will delight the eye, give oxygen to the lungs and, in general, be a beautiful decoration.

However, things are not so simple. First of all, you need to choose the right plants, then start planting them. In addition, for atmospheric and beauty, plants need to be placed correctly so that they do not interfere and are a pleasant decoration. Moreover, balcony vegetation, like outdoor plants, requires high-quality care.

For those who prioritize practicality rather than beauty, balcony landscaping is also suitable. In this case, instead of ornamental plants, you can use such greens, which you will later eat.

Having arranged everything correctly, you will be able to create a wonderful atmosphere with your own hands even in "Khrushchev", transforming it beyond recognition.

Overview of methods

Horizontal

This method of landscaping is based on the advantage of horizontal lines. Usually the method is used on large balconies, where at least a bicycle can easily fit. The balcony space, which was previously used as a warehouse, can be landscaped by creating a real blooming garden in your home.

This type of landscaping requires shelves, stands and racks, with the help of which pots with greenery are placed around the perimeter.

Vertical

With vertical gardening, you will have to use the walls. For this method, either weaving or falling vegetation is usually taken. Vertical landscaping works well for small, compact balconies that want to add flavor without taking up too much space.

Such landscaping usually requires a frame, all kinds of stands, hanging pots, supports or various shelves that you can build with your own hands or purchase ready-made ones in the store.

Combined

The combined method involves a combination of the two above-mentioned types of landscaping at once. This option is great for those who like an abundance of vegetation, but usually requires a large area.

Phytowalls

Fitowalls are quite an interesting type of landscaping, which requires not only financial costs, but also temporary ones. Fitostena is a small wall made of wood, which has special pockets with soil, where greens are planted. Such a device usually has a built-in autowatering system. It also has lights that come on and run on an hourly basis.

This greatly facilitates the life of a person who has decided to green up his balcony, since the plants grown in it practically do not require maintenance.

Suitable plants

First of all, it is worth choosing indoor flowers and plants that can be placed, for example, on a loggia. Indoor flowers can be used for vertical gardening. In addition, potted plants can also be combined with vines and other crops, which will be an interesting solution. Among indoor plants that are suitable for landscaping, fuchsia, geranium, begonia, chlorophytum and aloe are most often distinguished.

If you want to make your balcony garden lush and abundant in greenery, then it is recommended to pay attention to the curly specimens for this. They can not only decorate your balcony, but also protect the room from heat and street dust. Climbing plants are classified into many varieties: annuals and perennials, flowering and non-flowering, herbaceous and woody. Moreover, some of the plants can serve not only as a wonderful decor, but also periodically delight you with their harvest and fruiting.

Among the vines that are suitable for planting on a balcony and its vertical gardening, the annual morning glory is especially popular. This plant does not require special care, grows quickly and pleases its owner with large flowers of different colors. This vine loves light, warmth and well-fertilized soil with drainage. In one summer alone, in good conditions, it can grow up to 5 meters.

Tunbergia is another annual plant that can grow up to 2 meters in length. The plant has bright flowers that can reach 5 centimeters in diameter, making an excellent decoration for the balcony.

One-year-old nasturtium, which can delight its owner with bright flowers from summer to winter, should not be deprived of attention. Moreover, this plant differs in its composition. It is rich in vitamin C, and therefore can be used as an additive to salads. In addition, nasturtium can also supply its owner with fruits. They can be eaten fresh or used for pickling.

Perennial plants can also be planted on the loggias, which will be an excellent decoration for more than one year. Such crops include lemongrass, which is distinguished by its pleasant citrus aroma, maiden grapes and clematis.

However, we note that when choosing a particular plant, you need to focus on the features of the location of your balcony. Some of the plants love to bask in the sun and will not be able to develop normally in the shade, while others, on the contrary, will feel great in such conditions.

So, the most light-loving plants include petunia. She needs copious amounts of moisture, light and warmth. Under favorable conditions, it will decorate your balcony from mid-summer until October. Loves the sun and purslane, which is distinguished by abundant flowering. This period occurs at the beginning of summer and lasts until the first autumn days. Sun lovers should also include plants such as aggregatum, calendula, and sweet peas.

Plants such as marigolds, the flowering of which lasts from summer to mid-autumn, fuchsias, miniature hosta and periwinkle, are good for the shade. For the north side, ivy is also perfect, which is often used for vertical gardening, as well as toria and balsam, which actively bloom from early summer to the very end.

You can also grow healthy herbs on your balcony. For example, mint, basil, or rosemary will provide you with delicious meals and protection from harmful gnats. You can also plant lavender, which has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, or a spice like thyme. Plants such as marjoram, aromatic sage, parsley, dill, basil and even Chinese cabbage get along well in a balcony.

Care Tips

Of course, balcony greenery requires careful maintenance, like other plants. It is required to take care of them in the same way as for ordinary home flowers.

Proper care includes high-quality and timely watering, making the necessary dressings 2 times a month, regular and accurate loosening of the soil and elimination of wilted leaves and flowers. Note that top dressing is applied only after good watering. As for the choice of fertilizer, it is best to give your preference to liquid complexes, which include trace elements. There is an opportunity to purchase such complexes in shops for gardeners.

If you are growing a climbing crop, then it needs to be attached to a support at times. In a particularly hot season, plants can be sprayed.

To organize a winter garden on the loggia, you need to pay special attention to heating in order to maintain the temperature at +20 degrees. To do this, you can purchase an ordinary heater that will support the life of flowers. At the same time, drafts and sharp drops in temperature should not be allowed, as this can have a detrimental effect on plantings.

To provide additional moisture in the air masses, you can purchase an air humidifier, and for better lighting, you will have to buy lamps or lamps.

Beautiful examples

There are many options for landscaping a balcony, you just need to give your imagination an opportunity to roam.

For example, you can get beautiful pots or planters in bright colors, which should be in harmony with the shade of the flowers themselves.

You can also install a rack or even two on your balcony, if space permits, and place pots with plants on its shelves. For this option, you can use curly crops, which will look quite interesting. By the way, flower pots can be combined with vines, which will also be an excellent solution for decorating a balcony.

An interesting solution would be the use of suspended structures. Flowering plants with bright flowers look most advantageous in them. However, keep in mind that such a structure must be well secured so that it does not accidentally fall on someone at one point.

Plant boxes installed behind the railing are great for landscaping a loggia, but again, you should make sure that everything is well fixed and does not collapse. You can plant various herbs there, most of which usually look rather laconic and restrained, or you can also abundantly flowering plants - they will make the balcony bright and attractive.
