Even with the abundance of vegetables and greens available to consumers in markets and shops, many people tend to grow crops on their own. But not everyone has the opportunity to cultivate the land, to plant plants. Residents of high-rise buildings do not have a plot near the house, but there is also a way out for them - equipping a mini-greenhouse on the balcony.

Advantages and disadvantages

A compact greenhouse or a greenhouse in an apartment is a reality that can solve many issues of housekeeping in a modern format. This cannot but please the lovers of natural products and adherents of proper nutrition.

Arranging a home greenhouse has a number of advantages:

  • getting self-grown seedlings, suitable for subsequent transplantation and growth in the open field;

  • possibility save on planting materials in an apartment greenhouse;

  • creating a place for relaxation in a balcony environment, surrounded by the eternal greenery of heat-loving plants;

  • growing flowering plants, early varieties of vegetables, herbs;

  • possibility consume natural products all year round from your own balcony garden;

  • create your winter Garden.

Design options

The type of construction is determined taking into account what kind of vegetable and vegetable crops are planned to be grown in greenhouse conditions.

Often, homeowners purchase ready-made greenhouse structures. Such balcony mini-greenhouses are multi-level, with boxes in several rows.

Additionally, you need to purchase a special soil and equip a light source. An important role is given to heating the loggia. All these factors will have to be taken into account when deciding to create a greenhouse with your own hands.

On open and closed balcony structures, two types of covering options are used:

  1. greenhouses;

  2. greenhouses.

Using similar structures, seedlings are grown on loggias. The main task is to organize the necessary conditions for the growth of certain types of crops and to fence plants in case of temperature instability. It is also convenient to grow vegetables and fresh herbs there, which are not suitable for growing in a particular area.

Greenhouses

Simple structure of small shelving with elementary assembly, covered with glazed frames or a frame covered with polyethylene. The warmth in the greenhouse is provided by the sun's rays and fertilizers.

Other features should be noted:

  • rapid heating of air due to the compact design;

  • the ability to grow early crops;

  • it is convenient to germinate strong seedlings before transplanting them into open ground;

  • you can grow greens all year round (sorrel, arugula, green onions, basil and others);

  • mobile structure;

  • easy installation;

  • minimum costs with self-made greenhouse equipment;

  • actual use in the spring season.

The main thing is to create a reliable shelter that retains heat well. Each seedling must be illuminated with a fluorescent lamp. If necessary, the greenhouse is ventilated.

Greenhouses

The prototype of this outbuilding is a greenhouse. The sturdy frame is made of plastic, wood and metal. Alternative materials are polycarbonate and spunbond. Modern buildings are covered with plastic wrap.

Design features:

  • extended functionality (suitable for germinating seedlings and various plants without moving into open ground);

  • large dimensions;

  • various configuration;

  • warming up from natural and artificial light sources, different types of heating - actual conditions for planting exotic plants;

  • it is possible to use automated devices to maintain a certain level of soil moisture and air temperature;

  • As a rule, plants are grown in greenhouse conditions from the germination stage to the moment of harvest (full development cycle).

If the homeowner does not have the time or desire to personally build a greenhouse structure, ready-made options for compact greenhouses are available for sale. Outwardly, they resemble a profile bookcase under a layer of dense polyethylene.

The advantages of such an acquisition are the compact size and ergonomics of the mobile design.... Ease of assembly and disassembly, affordable price of products. In this case, you can grow several types of seedlings in a small area.

Compact greenhouses can be equipped in any suitable place on a loggia or balcony. They are arranged on the principle of shelving and covered with a special greenhouse film.

As standard, they are equipped with 3 shelves or include 4 shelves for arranging pots and boxes for seedlings. In the assembly, such a rack structure does not take up much space. In the warm season, it can be easily dismantled.

Mini greenhouses are easy to use. After the frame is assembled, it is covered with the included polyethylene cover. The product is made taking into account the dimensions of the base. The device greatly facilitates the process of caring for the landings, since there is a zipper on the front of the film. On some structures, the folding leaf is fixed with two zippers.

If desired, a compact greenhouse can be transported and installed in the country. The weight of the assembled stacking greenhouse is up to 5 kg. It is convenient to use such a greenhouse for germinating seeds, followed by transplanting mature plants into open ground, for planting flowers of thermophilic varieties when arranging a balcony winter garden. In the summer, grown crops can be displayed on the windowsill.

Arrangement of a greenhouse on a heated balcony

On the insulated glazed balcony, greenhouse conditions are already in themselves. Therefore, there is no need to build separate greenhouses.... The room is fully suitable for the cultivation of various seedlings, vegetables and ornamental crops.

The only difficulty may be that factor if the glazed warm loggia faces north. In this case, a lighting device with a fluorescent type backlight will help to correct the situation.

On the balcony with large panoramic windows, the greenhouse structure can be installed directly on the floor. Boxes with seedlings are placed there, having previously taken care of a reliable layer of waterproofing on the floor covering.

Loggias with panoramic windows are less common than balconies with parapet glazing... In this case, the greenhouse is arranged a little higher, providing access to the sun's rays to the plants.

The structure is raised to the level of the windowsill. To do this is quite simple, you need to make a frame like a table, placing it 30 cm below the windowsill. The width and length of the structure are determined depending on the size of the garden bed being organized.

The starting material can be metal profiles or wooden bars. The frame accommodates a plastic box up to 30 cm high. The bottom is covered with a film. Holes are made in the lower part of the box for the outflow of water. All holes are completed with plastic tubes and carefully sealed.

Since it is warm on the loggia, healthy vegetables and greens can be grown there all year round.

It is important to organize the optimal level of lighting and temperature conditions. Fluorescent lighting technology is suitable as a source of heat and artificial lighting.

How to make a greenhouse on an uninsulated balcony?

Greenhouses on non-glazed balconies are produced according to the standards adopted for the construction of street counterparts. It is paramount to create an accurate drawing of the proposed greenhouse. Then the frame is assembled on the balcony. And only after that a reliable shelter is equipped.

Instead of handicraft construction, some home gardeners find it easier to use ready-made factory models. But it is much more profitable to build a greenhouse with your own hands according to a certain size.

If you plan to use an open area only for growing vegetables, the greenhouse should be located over a larger area, rationally using the ceiling and floor.

For growing spinach and other greens in a loggia, a multi-level greenhouse structure is suitable. And it is advisable to place vegetable seedlings in one tier.

For the construction of the frame of greenhouses on open balconies, a metal profile is used, and more often plastic pipes, wooden beams - materials with low thermal conductivity.

It is optimal to use PVC film for covering the frame. A transparent dense cover for covering the frame is cut out from it. The pattern must be done with 3 cm allowances on all sides. The front panel is normally two-layer.

The film cover is connected with a snake, which simplifies the approach to landings. All parts of the PVC cloth are connected with tape or stitched with threads.

It is customary to use polycarbonate only for fixed elements of the film shelter. For example, to decorate the back wall of the frame and parts located on the sides.

The very principle of creating a shelter remains unchanged for this option.... The film front sheet is attached to the polycarbonate parts with double-sided tape.
