For some reason, many believe that it is best to decorate a bedroom in light or neutral colors. This misconception arose, in particular, due to the fact that often the smallest room in the apartment is used as a bedroom, and dark interior details are perceived as stealing space. However, this is absolutely not the case, and you can be convinced of this by reading our material to the end.

Advantages and disadvantages

This solution has many advantages.

  • With the correct "dosage" of dark pieces of furniture, space is saved, not reduced. And this is easily explained. Do you know the well-known expression "white makes you fat"? So this rule also applies to furnishings. Imagine the same bed, for example light beige and black. Which one do you think will appear visually smaller?
  • Bedroom design with dark furniture will always be in trend. This solution has already become a classic.
  • If the room is not overloaded with items of furniture of dark shades, it will be cozy. It will be comfortable to stay in it and fall asleep. Deep tones have a calming effect on a person.
  • And last but not least, the advantage is that dirt will be less visible on the surface of such furniture. Even if you spill coffee on a chocolate brown sofa or ottoman, the stain will be easier to remove than from light-colored upholstery.

Of course, there were some drawbacks.

  • An overdose of dark furniture will turn your bedroom into a dark crypt. Such a decision will please only Count Dracula.
  • If you opt for glossy surfaces of furniture modules, get ready for the fact that you will have to erase fingerprints from them several times a day. Dust, by the way, is also clearly visible on them.

Popular colors

The color palette of dark shades that are used for the production of bedroom sets is not too large. The most popular are four tones.

  • Nut. It has a rich brown color with a non-uniform pattern. There are varieties with a reddish or gray-green tint. The texture of walnut wood is also different: it may have twisting stripes, dots, strokes.
  • Wenge. The darkest color of the entire palette. It happens bluish-black, chocolate with barely noticeable golden streaks, maroon and even black-purple. If natural wenge oak wood (Millettia laurentii) was used in the production of furniture, it can have an even more expanded color range.

In any case, the color of wenge differs in saturation, requires careful "dosage".

  • Red tree. The wood of pterocarpus, mahogany, sandalwood and berry yew is collectively called red and has a brownish-red hue. Natural solid after processing and some time of use becomes darker.
  • Black (ebony) wood. It can be dark brown and black. Sometimes there are varieties with a reddish undertone, beige stripes.

How to match with decoration?

Well, we got to the same "dosage". How to fit a dark bedroom set into the space of even a small room? Let's figure it out.

  • There should not be many pieces of furniture in dark colors. Maximum allowed: bed, wardrobe, bedside table. You can include a dressing table or chair in the list, but only if the room is fairly large.
  • It is better to make the walls of the room monochromatic by painting them with paint or finishing with decorative plaster. The wallpaper will also fit well into the interior, just let it be without a print. The best colors for walls: white, milky, creamy, sand, ivory, coffee with milk, gray. If you like a more “lively” color scheme, you can play with very light shades of yellow, blue, tiffany. But they should be subtle, otherwise it will be difficult to combine them with furnishings.
  • Glossy surfaces reflect light. Accordingly, if you want to add "air" to the room, choose glossy facades (but do not forget about the aforementioned disadvantage - the tendency to splatter). The same effect can be obtained by using mirrors.
  • Lovers of bright accents can add color spots to the interior in the form of indoor plants, paintings, sconces.
  • On the floor you can put linoleum, carpet, laminate or parquet in the following colors: beige, olive, light brown. It is not recommended to use dark colors.
  • Ceiling it is best to make it classic - white. And whether it will be suspended, stretched, or simply whitewashed - your business.

Now let's find out what kind of interior styles the dark furniture is “friendly” with.

  • Classical. There is nothing surprising here. Suffice it to recall the furnishings of the palace bedrooms. There were always elements of furniture in dark colors. For a better interpretation of the classic style, products decorated with carved details are suitable.

Of course, all furniture should be made of natural solid wood.

  • Oriental. This refers to its Japanese direction. Your choice in this case is ebony black or dark brown beds or sofas. Bright accent inserts are allowed in the setting.
  • Modern. Very welcome to gilding on dark surfaces. Gold details can be repeated, for example, on curtains, textile products.
  • Techno and hi-tech. Here the best tandem is black furniture + chrome. These modern trends do not accept unnecessary colors and details, so it is best to keep the interior in monochrome.
  • Art Deco. Massive interior items will ideally fit here: a bed with a carved back, large, bulky bedside tables and the same dressing table. The ensemble will be completed by a floor lamp or sconce with bronze details.
  • Vintage. You will have to find or order a bed with an openwork or forged back. Use antique chests instead of bedside tables. The picture will be incomplete without mirrors in beautiful frames, bronze or porcelain figurines, candelabra.
  • Loft. Industrial design, which seems to many to be rude, is now chosen by many young people. Dark wood furniture fits perfectly into it. Forging is welcome (for example, on the headboard), leather (for poufs, armchairs, a sofa), roughly processed wood.

Selection of curtains and textiles

Let's talk about curtains first. Their appearance, and indeed their very presence in the room, depends on the presence / absence of natural light during the day. For example, if the windows face south / east, blackout curtains will be the best choice so that the sun's rays do not wake up the inhabitants of the room ahead of time.

If their direction is north or west, get light curtains or even abandon them.

As for the colors of the canvases, they should be lighter than the pieces of furniture, but darker than the shade of the walls. Of course, their "temperature" must match the overall interior design.

Bed linen can also be in harmony with curtains. By the way, let's immediately debunk the myth that bright "fun" bedding sets look best in a bedroom with dark furniture - this is absolutely not the case. The best option is white, gray, sand or milk linen, plain or with the simplest prints. Don't turn your bedroom into a circus tent.

Beautiful examples of the interior

Let's consolidate the material by looking at our small selection of photos.

  • A beautiful dark brown bedroom set with a subtle checkerboard pattern fits perfectly into a fairly spacious bedroom. Please note that the entire furnishings are in warm colors.
  • Modern minimalistic interior. The monochrome palette is diluted with green houseplants and a light print on the upholstery of the chair.
  • Very nice black-gray-white room design. Color spots would be superfluous here.
  • Who said that a small room would be even smaller if it was furnished with dark furniture? These examples clearly demonstrate that this is not the case. Only the correct arrangement of modules and the "dosage" of dark colors are important.
  • Luxurious bedroom of a fairly large area with a large window. Here, a very non-standard solution was used in the form of painting the walls in a dark gray-blue color and laying a brown laminate. But the high degree of natural insolation makes the room look especially airy and cozy.
  • Indigo walls and curtains and wenge furnishings could have made the room gloomy, but no: due to high ceilings, snow-white textiles and good lighting, everything looks very harmonious.
