The hallway is often called the most problematic room in the apartment. Either it is too large, but how to arrange it rationally is unclear. That, on the contrary, is narrow - and therefore impractical. But in almost any hallway configuration, a chest of drawers will fit perfectly. It is difficult to call him a business card at home, but his greeting word can be considered.

Views

Until recently, the hallways were completely modular - they were furnished with objects from one headset, so that an even ensemble looked flawlessly in the room. Now, not only in the hallway, but also in other spaces, appropriate eclecticism is appreciated: for example, at the kitchen table there are chairs from different collections, and even times.

Therefore, in the hallway, furniture can be heterogeneous, and you do not need to look for a chest of drawers that will be the same color as a wardrobe or a shelf under a mirror.

By installation

A couple of decades ago, 99% of the dressers were stationary. At least such models were in active demand. In movement, they are not always convenient, cumbersome and literally clumsy. In the more mobile XXI century, more mobile models of chests of drawers appear - suspended (or hinged). They are especially beneficial for a narrow and small corridor or hallway, because visually everything that is at least a couple of centimeters above the floor feels more lightweight. And in a small hallway you have to deal with cumbersomeness, which only narrows the space, visually creates the opposite effect.

The downside of hanging dressers is that you have to make holes in the wall in order to create fasteners that will hold the furniture. But if the design solution favorably transforms the hallway, you can make such a sacrifice.

By form

Corner chests of drawers in the hallway can be used more often than in any other room. At the same time, they are triangular and trapezoidal. If the hallway is square, and there is some kind of corner that lines up in the visual center at the entrance to the apartment, then such a chest of drawers can just take it. It is usually roomy, and its interior will replace a small cabinet. Usually these dressers have legs, but not necessarily.

There are chests of drawers and other shapes.

  • Rectangular. One of the most common options. They look, one might say, ordinary, but this does not prevent them from successfully fitting into the interior. To balance the chest of drawers with the top of the wall above it, you need to immediately think about what exactly will be at the top.

The options are different: a painting, a mirror, a decorative composition on the table top (vase, casket, souvenirs, books, etc.). And also above the rectangular chest of drawers in the hallway, you can hang a housekeeper, for example.

  • Square. It is less common, not very roomy, but laconic and cute. It will look good in a small hallway. Seems more cozy than rectangular ones.
  • Radial, semicircular, arbitrary shape. The rarest species, but this is not the case in a modern interior.

They require appropriate surroundings so that the rest of the environment plays along with the unusual furniture.

A chest of drawers can have large and small compartments, closed drawers, closed compartments, as well as shelves and display cases.

No matter how attractive such a filling may look, you need to immediately think about what the contents of the chest of drawers will be. Let's say what will stand in a large open compartment, or what will take up display space.

Materials (edit)

The option that the chest of drawers can only be made of wood can be mercilessly criticized. Even if a metal chest of drawers seems to be a blasphemy, this does not prevent such furniture from being built into hallways of different styles. But after all, rattan and wicker airy furniture, so suitable for small spaces, slowly but surely crowds out more bulky things made of wood, chipboard and fiberboard.

Metal

It is fashionable, practical, functional. For an office space, of course, a more optimal option, but not only. In an apartment that adheres to the loft aesthetics, such a chest of drawers will be very appropriate. Or, for example, it will be a model with forged elements, which can also be elegant and convincing in the interior.

It looks unusual, it is used for a long time due to the strength of the material - what are not arguments.

Wood

With a variety of modern models, I would like to pay attention, if not to antiques, then to retro things. They were often made very high quality, soundly, because grandmother's chests of drawers can and still serve faithfully and without complaints. But only outwardly, they may need some upgrade: somewhere in a cosmetic restoration, somewhere in a more radical repair. But the fact that they are worthy of such investments is evidenced by examples of numerous alterations that have become a trend and an occasion to repeat the feats of home restorers.

Such dressers are worthy of becoming the main element of the hallway, but natural wood is natural wood.

Chipboard and chipboard

More budget wood options. Chipboard is, in fact, sawdust and small shavings mixed with glue and pressed. But it should be understood that the composition of the adhesive contains formaldehydes, as well as epoxy resin, whose fumes can be dangerous to the human body. And chipboard is very moody in relation to moisture. Probably the main plus of this material, as well as chipboard, is the low price.

Dimensions (edit)

The main parameters of the furniture are height, length and depth. And these parameters are decisive when furniture has to be entered, built in, optimally selected for the existing dimensions of the hallway. Often very cramped.

  • Length. Determined by the distance between the outer surfaces of the sidewalls. The longer the length, the more roomy the chest of drawers in most cases. Furniture that is less than 50 cm in length will not be considered practical. The minimum length is considered to be 60 cm. These chests of drawers store bags, shoes, accessories. The standard is 80-100 cm, you can store anything in long models, they can be single-section or two- or even three-section. From 100 cm - these are already long models in several sections. Often these are placed against the wall as the only self-sufficient element, that is, the same wall will not have either a cabinet or a bench.
  • Depth. Chests of drawers are usually divided into narrow and wide. The depth will be shown by the volume for the location of the fill. For small hallways, narrow small chest of drawers are good. But the depth should be at least 30 cm, at least 35 cm. But at 25 cm, any storage is already problematic. 40-50 cm are considered standard. If the depth is 60 cm or more, it also becomes not particularly convenient to use such a chest of drawers.
  • Height. Chests of drawers up to 1 m are considered low. They are usually quite roomy. But if the height is 85 cm, then this is no longer a chest of drawers, but a curbstone. Chests of drawers 100-130 cm high are called medium or standard, they usually have 3-5 drawers. But high chests of drawers are suitable for large hallways. They can be tall, narrow and not too large, but not all spaces are suitable - if the room has low ceilings, this is not an option for her.

Practicality and functionality of the chest of drawers can be different. If it is not fully loaded, if small things are stored there, rather loosely, not heaped, it has the right to be shallow.

Design

It should be based on the style that was chosen for the arrangement of the hallway.

The design of the chest of drawers depends on the interior style.

  • Scandinavian. Light (can be white, can be light gray, milky, ivory), always of a simple form, with a laconic design of the handles. If it is a print, then it is unobtrusive and cozy.
  • Modern. The so-called modern style is ready for original, technological solutions. Therefore, even dressers with frosted glass worktops may well appear in the hallway.
  • Eclecticism. It is difficult to independently create such a design in an apartment, this style requires at least a look.
  • Retro. You can repaint the Soviet chest of drawers in expressive red, and the stylish thing will become the accent of the hallway. You can install a bulky black chest of drawers against the main wall, put a candlestick on it, no less expressive, and this will ennoble the space.

In order not to be mistaken in design, in addition to a practical approach to the selection of furniture, its functionality, you need to focus on the emotional perception of things. It gives the space energy, sets the mood and can be the trump card in the preference of one chest of drawers over another.

How to choose?

The choice of furniture always implies taking into account several criteria, but this is when it comes to a competent, balanced choice. People often do it emotionally, without mentally ticking the checkboxes.

Here's what to consider when choosing.

  1. The size. The size of the furniture should always match the size of the room.
  2. Appointment. Long products are capable of replacing even a wardrobe in some way. But a chest of drawers with a mirror (and there are also such ones) can serve as a dressing table, which is sometimes also necessary.
  3. Compliance with style. No matter how beautiful a chest of drawers is, if it is classic, austere, bulky, and the hallway as a whole corresponds to eco-boho, it will be alien to it.
  4. Compatibility with other furniture. You can't do without it. Each item in the hallway should "sing along" to the other. Or at least not to interfere with the main task - to create a cozy, outwardly conflict-free space.

Designer cool chests of drawers will conflict with mass-produced faceless furniture (with rare exceptions), original modern models will not be combined with counterbalancing classics, and so on.

Beautiful examples in the interior

These examples inspire the purchase of a chest of drawers that will not be "walk-through and inconspicuous", but the real hero of the first plan.

  • There are two dressers: one on legs, the second hinged. Two chests of drawers on legs would make the space heavier, visually displace it, narrow it, but such a successful decision did not allow this to be done.
  • Nice gray, which will be good both when it is gloomy outside the window and when the sun is shining. Neutral, simple, and thus perfect. The furniture is quite roomy, the simple and democratic decor emphasizes the charm of this scandi-simplicity.
  • An original wooden chest of drawers that will look nice in a not the smallest hallway. Convenient for storing various little things that should be laid out in compartments.
  • Tall and narrow dressers can become shoe racks, as in this example. The furniture is complete, not "dull", it refreshes the space very much.
  • The brown narrow chest of drawers is not immediately noticeable, which is a plus in this case. It is not striking and does not overlap the harmonious picture from a tall narrow cabinet and a comfortable bench.

The pieces of furniture in this hallway come from completely different sets, but together they look more than pretty.

  • Another mosaic chest of drawers that will suit a hallway with a lack of dynamics. Roughly speaking, it enlivens sleepy rooms.
  • An excellent linear arrangement of furniture - a simple white chest of drawers, next to a shoe rack with a seat (even a small sofa), and then a mirrored cabinet. Comfort is felt from the first steps into the home.
  • The retro commode, of course, guesses the mood of the room. Soundly, reliably, in the style of the middle of the last century. Such furniture is definitely worth restoring.
  • And this is an argument in favor of restoration, because the quality and energy of such furniture is beyond criticism. But in a small hallway it will look ridiculous.
  • A narrow chest of drawers with slatted doors, possibly homemade. Looks adorable and self-contained.
  • Chest of drawers with a seat, two in one, the perfect solution for the same scandi style. Light, nice little thing.
  • A vintage thing (or pseudo-vintage) for supporters of bright solutions.Requires a decent, appropriate environment. Perhaps this is family furniture that will decorate the home for more than one year and will undergo more than one restoration.

Obviously, a chest of drawers can become a sense-forming element of the hallway. Or simply meaningful furniture that draws attention to itself. Therefore, this choice should not be accidental.
