A walk-in closet is an important part of any home, but how do you organize lighting in this room? From this publication, you will learn about the possible lighting options for the dressing room, how to properly position the light and which lighting fixtures are better to choose.

Natural light in the dressing room

When planning a dressing room, consider the location of the window - it's always good when there is natural light. Daylight is evenly distributed throughout the room, so it is not recommended to use a curtain in the storage room if there is a window opening.

In the best case, order light roller shutters, they do not interfere with the passage of sunlight, at the same time they will close the room from prying eyes and save things from burning out.

If there is little natural light in the dressing room, use different types of lamps.

The lighting in the storage room can be combined or entirely made up of artificial sources. If this room is also used as an ironing room, a clothing repair workshop, a fitting room, then with the help of lighting elements, individual areas can be emphasized.

Types of lamps

The lighting fixtures in the dressing room, as in any other room, play an important role. Very often, at the expense of various lamps, a certain zone is distinguished.

Let's designate the most popular types of lamps.

  • Halogen - great for ceiling lighting in plasterboard construction. Such lamps evenly distribute the luminous flux; they can also be installed in the visor of the cabinet. But you need to be aware that halogen lamps do not last long, and when the temperature drops, they completely burn out. They heat up quickly, which means they should not be used in closed cabinets.
  • LED - high-tech devices, economical and durable. Such lamps are used as a designer find in the interior of premises, in closed storage systems - they are good lighting. They are safe to operate and do not take up a lot of electricity.
  • Lamp in the form of an LED strip is a simple, highly reliable design that is suitable for interior lighting of storage cabinets. Due to the various color options, you can zone the space.
  • Luminescent are of compact type and tubular (linear). Suitable for ceiling lighting, linear illuminated mirrors. Such lamps will last a long time if you protect them from mechanical stress. The main disadvantage is that there are difficulties when connecting such lamps.

Whatever type of lamps you choose to illuminate your dressing room, you need to strive to ensure that the lighting in this corner is close to natural light, especially if the dressing room also serves as a fitting room.

Backlight ideas

The light in the dressing room should be at a good enough level to find the desired item, but should not be dazzling.

The most popular lighting for such rooms is ceiling lighting.

There are several ideas for this option.

  • Spotlights around the perimeter. This is suitable for a large wardrobe. In this case, you can easily find any item, even in the far corner of the rack.
  • LED strip or LED spotlights. This option is the closest to natural light. You can highlight only individual parts - a mirror, shelves, or run an LED strip around the entire perimeter.
  • Hanging chandelier. Suitable for a large dressing room with a high ceiling.If used as central lighting, then choose paws with soft, dim light and combine the chandelier with other sources in different places.

Shelves and racks can have their own lighting. Such local illumination will visually expand the area and immediately draw your attention to the desired thing.

  • Halogen copies - are installed pointwise, for example, over the racks. We must take into account the fact that these lamps are fast incandescent and it is better that they do not come into contact with things.
  • Surface mounted luminaires with design for adjusting the direction of light. It is very convenient and practical for finding the right thing on the shelf.
  • LED lightening will help you zone the shelves and divide them by color scheme. So, you can select a shelf with shoes, a rack with clothes, and so on.

Mirrors by the dressing room can also be decorated with light elements.

In this case, it is better to place the light source around or above the mirror part. When there is a window in the wardrobe, fix the mirror in front of it.

This will visually increase the space and create a natural light flux without distortion of real shades.

How do I arrange the light?

Experts recommend thinking about the moment of lighting the dressing room already at the design stage of such a room. Here are some tips from designers:

  • Think over everything about lighting, even before installing storage racks;
  • give preference to natural lighting, it is good when it can be made central, know that colored illumination distorts the shades of things;
  • in small dressing rooms large chandeliers are inappropriate - this is an option for large spaces, so in a small storage room, give preference to compact sources and arrange them pointwise;
  • in dressing rooms of a non-standard type (for example, corner ones), it is better to use mobile lamps with a mechanism for regulating the luminous flux.

Well, the most modern and economical option is inclusion sensors. They will automatically light up your room when you enter. They won't work unless needed.

How to conduct?

All work on lighting in the wardrobe space is best done at the very beginning of the repair. The most convenient option is ceiling lighting. If you need spot lighting, think about where to install the socket for the lamp, taking into account the location of the shelves.

Run lighting around the entire perimeter - this is the most functional option than central lighting. The light source in the center will not give the effect that the LED strip is around, therefore, based on the area and location of the wardrobe, calculate and conduct lighting.
